Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that "Britain, France, and Germany cannot and should not be allowed to undermine the credibility of the UN Security Council by misusing UN Resolution 2231, which they themselves have failed to comply with."
The official Iranian news agency reported that Araghchi made these remarks in a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the president and members of the UN Security Council, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
Araghchi rejected the European troika’s claims about triggering the mechanisms outlined in the 2015 nuclear deal, stressing that his letter explained why the three European countries lack any legal, political, or moral legitimacy to activate such mechanisms.
He stated, "The three countries have effectively lost their status as participants in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) due to their actions and their persistent, long-standing failure to fulfill their commitments. Therefore, any attempt by them to revive obsolete UN Security Council resolutions lacks credibility and is legally null and void."
Araghchi affirmed Iran’s "capability to counter any act of barbaric aggression," but emphasized that the country has "always been ready to respond to purposeful diplomacy based on goodwill."
Two days earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had urged his counterparts from France, Britain, and Germany—during a closed-circuit televised meeting—to abandon their policy of threats and pressure, including the threat to trigger the "snapback" mechanism to reinstate sanctions against Tehran.
