The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, announced on Thursday the appointment of Braima Camara as the new Prime Minister, replacing Rui Duarte Barros, by presidential decree.
Local media reported that the authorities have not provided any clarification regarding the reasons for the dismissal of the former Prime Minister, Barros, who had held the position since December 2023 and was a member of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).
This government reshuffle comes just four months before the presidential elections, scheduled for November 24, amid an ongoing political crisis linked to the disputed end of the president’s mandate.
The newly appointed Prime Minister, Braima Camara, belongs to the ruling Movement for Democratic Alternation (MADEM-G15) party.
Since the 2014 elections, Guinea-Bissau has been striving to consolidate its democratic transition and return to constitutional order, facing recurring political and security challenges—most recently after President Embaló came to power in December 2019.
