U.S. President Donald Trump announced today, Thursday, that he will host Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House tomorrow, Friday, for a historic peace summit between the two nations.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated: "I look forward to hosting President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia at the White House tomorrow for a historic peace summit."
He added that tomorrow "will be a historic day for Armenia, Azerbaijan, the United States, and the world," noting that the two countries "have been at war for many years, resulting in thousands of deaths. Many leaders have tried to end this war without success—until now."
Trump emphasized that his administration "has been engaged with both sides for a long time. Tomorrow, President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan will join me at the White House for an official peace agreement signing ceremony."
He also indicated that the U.S. "will sign bilateral agreements with both countries to pursue shared economic opportunities, unlocking the full potential of the South Caucasus region."
The President expressed pride in "these two courageous leaders (Aliyev and Pashinyan) for doing the right thing for the great peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan."
Last March, the U.S. commended Armenia and Azerbaijan for concluding what it described as "historic negotiations" to resolve their decades-long conflict, following the two nations' announcement that a peace agreement was ready for signing.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in a release: "The United States applauds Armenia and Azerbaijan for finalizing a historic peace treaty."
