The European Commission has announced that it has reached a preliminary conclusion that Meta violated the Digital Services Act (DSA) due to what it described as the addictive design of Facebook and Instagram. The investigation focused on several features, most notably infinite scrolling, autoplay, push notifications, and highly personalized recommendation systems, which the Commission believes encourage users to spend more time on the platforms. The commission explained that Meta did not adequately assess the risks this design could pose to users' mental and physical health, particularly minors and vulnerable groups. It also noted that personalized recommendations, infinite scrolling, and autoplay encourage users to continue browsing content almost automatically, which could lead to unhealthy usage habits and compulsive behaviors.
